The Institute of Aikido Australia holds gradings
four times a year in March, June, September and December.
Instructors will inform students when they are eligible to grade.
Students must then confirm that they are willing to grade and pay a
grading fee of $40. Fee payment is a compulsorary pre-requisite to
grading.
There are ten kyu grades, as outlined in the grading
syllabus. The grading syllabus is intended to inform
students which skills they are required to master before their
grading. We note that while the basic aikido techniques are referred
to by the Japanese names, students are not expected to learn
Japanese in order to learn aikido. Instruction will be provided in
English.
Shodan and other black belt grading will be held
once a year in June. It usually takes between three to five years to
achieve shodan grading, based on the number of hours trained and
individual ability.
New students should read the section in the
syllabus on dojo etiquette.
